Here’s one I made earlier

It recently occurred to me that 101 is quite a lot of films. So I hope you don’t think it is cheating to include one that I made a few years ago about Favela Tourism here in Rio for the online network Current TV.

Paulo Amendoim, the guide featured in the piece, has become a great friend of mine, and I made sure to include him when I worked as the local producer for the show No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain. It was funny to see, because in Rocinha, no one recognised Bourdain, but everyone recognised Amendoim!

101 é um monte de filmes. Então, vou incluir uma que fiz há alguns anos sobre turismo nas favelas aqui no Rio para a rede de TV on-line Current TV.

Paulo Amendoim, o guia no filme, é um grande amigo meu, e eu apresentou ele para o show americano No Reservations com Anthony Bourdain quando eu trabalhava de produtor de local. Foi engraçado ver, porque na Rocinha, ninguém reconheceu Bourdain, mas todos reconheceram Amendoim!

Did you know there was a group of Native Indians living in the centre of Rio de Janeiro? The Maracana Village is a unique community of indigenous people who live next to the famous Maracana Stadium, and they are now under threat as the area is being redeveloped for the World Cup 2014 and Olympics in 2016.

It seems since we filmed, it has been announced that the building will be demolished.

I was commissioned by an outside producer to make a film about the Maracana Village, and I thought it would be interesting to share the project here.

FILM NUMBER 98 is the film I wanted to make – without narration, with the voices of the Indians themselves.

FILM NUMBER 97 is the film they ended up making – with narration and a ‘voice of authority’. It’s no longer available online, but trust me, it was rubbish and boring…

Rio’s Carnaval Parade at the Sambodromo stadium is like a technicolor, psychedelic, surreal hallucinogenic-inspired dream. I had the great chance to have a front row seat this year, thanks to my friend Sanjeev, and decided to make this rather indulgent short film

This film is not about anything in particular. It is just what happens sometimes when you knock on someone’s door.

Este filme não é sobre nada em particular. É apenas o que acontece às vezes quando você bater na porta de alguém.

Of course the first film has to be about the Carnaval. You know the famous parade with the scantily clad women gyrating to the samba – but what you don’t know is that two days before the main event, thousands of children, as young as 3, hold their own parade in the famous Sambodromo stadium. I had the great honour of spending the day with six year-old Darla, Queen of the Mangueira Samba School and her family, brother Darlon, mother Marlene and father Sisnei.
